SCG Donates Innovative Positive-Pressure Swab Chamber Solutions for Indonesia
SCG #CareTogether Together to protect the frontline in handling COVID-19 by donating innovative solutions to 40 positive-pressure swab chambers in the amount of 1 billion rupiah for Indonesia. This donation was symbolically handed over to the Head of the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB Indonesia), Mr. Doni Monardo, on Wednesday (10/6) in Jakarta and to the Governor of West Java, Mr. Ridwan Kamil, on Friday (19/06) in Bandung, West Java which is then distributed to various hospitals and health laboratories in Indonesia.
The Swab chamber, which is an innovative solution by SCG to prevent the possibility of transmission of COVID-19 from patients to medical staff, was built with hollow steel structure and sandwich wall panels made of metal and foam which makes this chamber sturdy, lightweight, sterile, and fast in the production process. The SCG Swab Chamber also uses a positive pressure method to ensure that air that may have been contaminated outside is not contaminated into the chamber. In addition, this room is equipped with 99.97% HEPA Filters and UV light which can kill viruses and exhaust fans to ensure the safety and comfort of medical personnel in conducting examinations.

SCG Intensifies Renewable Energy Innovation in Indonesia to Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions by 2030
SCG consistently implements ESG practices to reduce Greenhouse Gas emissions by 2030 and achieve net zero emissions by 2050 through various renewable energy innovations.
SCG continues to contribute improving the quality of life of Indonesian people, especially around SCG, one of the way is through the SCG Sharing the Dream scholarship since 2012. In 2018, 410 scholarships were awarded to 400 high school students and 10 undergraduate students. Together we have succeeded in helping Indonesian children realize their dreams.
This program is a community empowerment program to produce banana chips with various flavors by PT Semen Jawa and PT Tambang Semen Sukabumi around the place where the company operates. With this CSR program, SCG helps the community to be more independent and skilled.
SCG Excellence Internship program aims to help improve the capabilities of Indonesian students, especially in preparation for welcoming the ASEAN Economic Community. It is aimed to gain experiences and skills of Indonesian students required for their future careers. Amid the intense competition and crisis of qualified human resources, this program can equip the students with knowledge and the expected skills in the professional world, all to help further their future career development.
The program is designed to select students who are about to graduate both bachelor and master degrees from various universities across Indonesia. SCG Supports Indonesia to Achieve Net Zero Emission Target by 2060, Encourages ESG Implementation and Cross-Sector Collaboration
Jakarta, November 2, 2023 – Climate change and social issues pose serious threats that must be promptly addressed by global society, including Indonesia. SCG, one of ASEAN’s leading companies managing three business units: Cement-Building Material, Packaging, and Chemicals, hosted the ESG SYMPOSIUM 2023 in Indonesia today (2/11), continuing its Sustainable Development Symposium series. Centered on the theme “Collaboration for Sustainable Indonesia,” the forum aims to accelerate the net zero emission target, address social inequality, and achieve sustainable development through the adoption of the ESG 4 Plus strategy. These goals align with the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) climate commitment, aiming to keep the global temperature rise below 2 degrees Celsius through various efforts.
At this event, SCG showcased technological innovations and initiatives from its business units to support sustainability, including floating solar panels, solar roofs, Emisspro® (high emissivity coating for improved thermal efficiency), Alternative Fuel/Alternative Raw Material, Refuse-derived Fuel, Biogas Utilization, SCGC Green Polymer, and Cert+ (online carbon credit verification and digitization for the forestry industry).
President & CEO of SCG, Roongrote Rangsiyopash, emphasized Southeast Asia’s vulnerability to global crises due to its high population and rapid economic activity. In Indonesia, national issues today include the air pollution crisis, rising sea levels, waste management, and economic disparities.
“Amid real challenges and a rapidly evolving industrial landscape, sustainability is no longer a choice but an obligation. Businesses play a crucial role in shaping the future. As NDC targets increase, Indonesia has a task to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060, a reduction that can reach up to 43% with international support. Let’s align our efforts to support national progress and create a healthier, prosperous future for Indonesia,” said Roongrote.
Deputy Minister of Maritime Affairs and Natural Resources at the Ministry of National Development Planning, Vivi Yulaswati, stated that the government continuously strives to create an ecosystem facilitating investments for transitioning toward a green economy.
“SDGs financing is a platform managed by the Ministry of National Development Planning to develop funding for SDGs projects through various schemes like PPP, blended finance, equity financing, and others,” Vivi explained. She added that the ESG concept presents a new paradigm in business value creation, offering a broad approach to risk mitigation and value creation.
Director-General for Climate Change Control at the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, Laksmi Dhewanti, emphasized the world’s triple planetary challenges – climate change, biodiversity loss, and environmental pollution. The ESG concept becomes a game-changer to create a more sustainable, healthy, and balanced world, offering incentives for companies and industries to responsibly manage their environmental impact.
“Collaboration and cooperation are the keys to success in facing climate change challenges. Indonesia’s commitment, from the government to all stakeholders, is the foundation that must be coupled with hard work and smart action to implement real climate change mitigation actions across all sectors,” explained Laksmi.
Executive Vice President of SCG, Thammasak Sethaudom, stressed that achieving sustainable development and NDC targets requires collaboration from all sectors.
“I encourage all stakeholders to maintain a collaborative and innovative spirit. We cannot achieve sustainable futures alone; it requires collective efforts from diverse perspectives and expertise. Let’s work together for Indonesia’s sustainability. In the coming years, I hope we will witness more remarkable examples of sustainable collaboration between Indonesia and the global community,” said Thammasak.
Country Director of SCG in Indonesia, Warit Jintanawan, highlighted the importance of aligned ESG implementation across all aspects.
“By implementing ESG, we’re not only addressing environmental issues but also touching upon socio-economic matters, aiming to raise Indonesia’s per capita income to match developed countries and reduce poverty to zero percent,” said Warit.
To address social disparities and support community welfare, SCG established the Gerakan Desa Berdikari (Independent Village Movement) program, providing mentoring and training for local businesses. More than 70 SMEs in Sukabumi have been developed under this program. One participant, Dida Mauludin, Chairman of Lumbung Berkah Aquaculture Group, successfully transformed Sukamaju Village into a Catfish Village, empowering 150 millennial breeders to develop hygienic catfish products.
“Thanks to SCG’s business funding and guidance, our venture grew rapidly from 2 ponds to 123, managed in an integrated manner with the community. We also obtained CBIB and LSPro certifications, ensuring the quality and competitiveness of our products,” stated Dida.
For its sustainability efforts, SCG globally achieved the highest score in the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices (DJSI) for the Building Materials category. This achievement reflects the company’s commitment to the ESG 4 Plus practices, covering Net Zero efforts, green products, and industry creation (Go Green), reducing inequality, and embracing collaboration.
SCG supports the Indonesian government’s policy direction by accelerating green innovation development, such as renewable energy, SCGC Green Polymer, and biodegradable packaging. SCG Intensifies Renewable Energy Innovation in Indonesia to Achieve Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction by 2030
Jakarta, October 26, 2023 – SCG, a leading company in ASEAN, consistently implements ESG practices to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and achieve net zero emissions by 2050. Under the ESG 4 Plus framework, SCG is implementing various renewable energy innovations and embracing collaborations with all stakeholders.
SCG’s Country Director in Indonesia, Warit Jintanawan, explained that climate change warnings, such as rising temperatures, droughts, and sea-level rise, are already evident. The Indonesian government has set an increased target for greenhouse gas emission reduction (Nationally Determined Contribution or NDC) by 2030, with self-effort at 31.89 percent (equivalent to 358 million tons of CO2eq) and 43 percent (equivalent to 446 million tons of CO2eq) with international assistance. This commitment is also part of the 2045 Indonesia Emas Program.
“As a forward-thinking company, SCG supports the Indonesian government’s efforts to address the climate crisis by reducing greenhouse gas emissions, which have already been reduced by 33.04 million tons of CO2eq since 2020. To continue these efforts, SCG continues to prioritize the use of renewable fuels and low-carbon fuels in all its production processes,” explained Warit.
In Indonesia, SCG currently records a total monthly energy consumption from its operational activities in cement-building materials, packaging, and petrochemical productions of 1.8GJ. To balance this energy consumption, SCG invests in biomass, biogas, cement production waste, and solar energy utilization.
In Indonesia, SCG has three initiatives carried out by various subsidiaries. First, PT Semen Jawa and PT Tambang Semen Sukabumi, SCG’s first cement plants in Indonesia, use Alternative Fuel and Alternative Raw Material (AF/AR) technology to produce energy to meet the plant’s power needs. PT Semen Jawa is also developing a Refuse-Derived Fuel (RDF) facility to convert municipal solid waste into alternative energy to replace fossil fuels through co-processing in the cement kilns.
“The energy transition initiative focusing on recycling technology is a strategic step for the company to achieve the Net Zero target. This initiative also represents our commitment to Embrace Collaboration within the ESG 4 Plus framework. We collaborate with various industrial players to supply industrial waste for AF/AR and work with the Sukabumi District Government to supply waste for RDF technology,” said Peramas Wajananawat, President Director of PT Semen Jawa & PT Tambang Semen Sukabumi.
Second, in the use of solar energy, KIA Ceramics, in collaboration with Sun Energy Indonesia, has installed solar panels on its factory roof that have been generating more than 1 GWh of electricity since 2022. These solar panels convert sunlight into electricity using photovoltaic technology and store it in batteries for production needs. The use of solar panels is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 600 tons, equivalent to planting 881 trees. PT Semen Jawa has also utilized solar energy for part of its energy sources, working with Cahaya Power Indonesia to install a 1,410 kW solar panel roof at its Sukabumi factory.
Third, in the use of biogas, FajarPaper employs an Anaerobic Treatment System to process wastewater and produce biogas as an alternative fuel. As a result, the company can save approximately 27,500 tons of coal usage and reduce costs by around Rp23 billion per year. This transition has reduced greenhouse gas emissions by about 45,000 metric tons of CO2 annually.
In implementing these various initiatives, SCG has allocated a regional investment plan, including Indonesia, of 5 billion THB, or approximately more than 2.1 trillion IDR. This fund is used for research, technology development, and implementation of these technologies in SCG‘s production and operations in Indonesia.
“We continue to strive to anticipate various challenges and focus on sustainable development goals. Therefore, we welcome collaboration with various industry players and the government to achieve our targets in reducing carbon emissions and increasing the use of renewable energy,” concluded Warit.
The various renewable energy innovations stated above will be showcased at the ESG Symposium 2023 Indonesia: Collaboration for Sustainable Indonesia exhibition, which will be held on November 2, 2023, at The Ritz-Carlton Jakarta, Pacific Place. This event is a forum for developing ideas, sharing experiences, and collaboration among stakeholders, including the government, industry players, and civil society, in advancing strategic ESG-related programs. This event will be the second of its kind in Indonesia and is an extension of the annual ESG Symposium held in Bangkok, Thailand, for the past 11 years.
